Abstract

Architects have significant responsibilities towards society, social responsibility is one of these undenied responsibilities which are defined according to The International Union of Architects (UIA). It creates and realizes opportunities for community development through different approaches of engagement. According to Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) charter, these approaches is summarized as; disaster cases, cultural heritage, social housing, pro bono work and universal design. Every approach has different way of engagement. In addition, architects have many activities to apply the desired community development such as; Physical and environmental intervention, public engagement and enhancement of livability. As well, social responsibility of architects has three domains of impact; investment in Human services, enhancement of culture and arts and local community development. In this study, the term of local community development is used as an appropriate domain to apply social responsibility of architects. Furthermore, the evaluation of architects’’ success to apply their social responsibility are determined through five indicators; quality of life, security, social capital, participation and social welfare. These indicators vary in importance according to every approach of engagement.It is important to suggest a methodology that clarify the correlation between the social responsibility of architects and local community development by focusing on literature reviews and analyze of examples of every approach. This study suggest a framework (three dimensional matrix) includes; approaches of engagement, architects’ practices and indicators of community development. This framework is a guide for architects in attainting development. In addition, the thesis concludes with recommendations on how to pinpoint the most influential indicator for every approach, in order to be focused and enhanced. To insure the applicability of the suggested framework, it is applied on culture heritage approach through a case study in Islamic Cairo. The impact of social responsibility of architects is investigated in one of historical districts of Cairo; Aldarb Al-Ahmar which suffer from distinctive neglect.
