Abstract

The study was done on parents of 50 hospitalized infants in neonatal intensive care unit Beni-suief University Hospital.
The included parents were subjected to demographic data and filled a questionnaire about coping processes. The neonates were subjected to demographic data, examination and investigations.
The most commonly coping process used is turning to religion then the second is wishful thinking and the third one is exercite of restrain.
The least commonly used process is denial then the second less common is self- blame and negativity and mental disengagement is the third less commonly used
.
Parents in rural areas were different from others in urban areas in the coping process of emotional discharge.
Parents with previous sibling admission were different from others without previous sibling admission in coping processes of wishful thinking and positive reinterpretation.
Parents with positive consanguinity were different from others of negative consanguinity in the coping process of active coping.
There were no statistical differences between parents in the coping processes regarding their sex, age, education, frequent visits to neither the NICU nor the period of stay of their infants in the NICU.
