Abstract The present work presents the effect of electrode selection on microstructure, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of API 5L X52 weldments. Different welds were produced by using different shielded metal arc welding electrodes such as E7018, E7018-1, E8010P1-G, E8010-G, E6010, and E6013. Microstructure of welds was examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Chemical composition of weldments was calculated and experimentally determined. Tensile strength, yield strength, impact toughness, bending test, hardness, and polarization measurements were conducted on the weld metals. Impact toughness testing was carried out at -60oC. Metallography indicated that, acicular ferrite percentage in fusion zone has been changed with different used electrodes, E7018-1 gave the highest acicular ferrite (≈69%) while E6013 gave the lowest value of acicular ferrite (≈ 46%). Bend test was acceptable according to API 1104, no cracks or other imperfections where observed. It was observed that, Ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, and impact values increased as acicular ferrite content increases in the weld joints. Electrochemical measurements showed that, E7018-1 gave the best corrosion .resistance while E6013 gave the worst corrosion resistance. |
