Abstract

Thirty male albino rats were divided into six groups of five rats each. At the end of experimental period, rats were fasted over night before sacrificing under the light. Liver was collected rapidly after decapitation of animals under anesthesia then washed with normal physiological saline and divided, 1st part freezed at –20oC for oxidative stress assessment, 2nd part was fixed in neutral formalin at 10% for histopathological examination.
I- Effect on body weight: The present study revealed that oral administration of paracetamol to experimental rats displayed a significant decrease. In addition there was a significant decrease in body weight in rats treated. Also non-significant change in body weight when compared with paracetamol treated group, but oral administration of cinnamon 2 hours before paracetamol in experimental rats showed a significant decrease in body weight.
II-Effect on liver weight: In the same study oral administration of silymarin and cinnamon to experimental rats showed non-significant change in liver weight when compared with the control group.
III-Effect on liver functions A-Effect on liver enzymes: Showed a significant increase in AST, ALT and ALP activities when compared with control group, while the rats orally administered by silymarin and cinnamon showed non-significant change in AST,ALT and ALP activities and finally when experimental rats.
B-Effect on protein profiles: While the rats orally administered by silymarin or cinnamon showed non-significant change in albumin and total protein when compared with control group. Revealed non-significant change in globulin level in rats orally administered with paracetamol or silymarin or cinnamon when compared with control group. The oral administration of paracetamol to experimental rats showed a significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in total bilirubin,
C- Effect on lipid profile: Showed a significant increase in cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL levels, while there was a significant decrease in HDL level when all of them compared with control group.
IV-Effect on antioxidant activities and lipid peroxidation: A significant increase in MDA concentration activity with a significant decrease in SOD enzyme and CAT enzyme activities. The other groups showed non-significant change in the concentration of MDA and activities of SOD and CAT enzymes when compared with control group.
