Abstract Treatment of keloid scars is highly challenging and many treatments have been suggested to give the best possible esthetic outcome. Amniotic membrane is the innermost layer of placenta, it can be used as a graft and as a biologic dressing. A clinical study was conducted on 10 patients with keloid scars in cervicofacial region, the keloid scar was excised with the placement of amniotic membrane layer under the skin and wound closure by primary intention and another amniotic membrane layer was put as a biologic dressing as well. The collected data 3 months after final treatment revealed a decrease in the mean score on Vancouver scar scale. Mean score for pigmentation decreased from 1.3 to 1.1 for vascularity from 1.3 to 1.2, pliability from 3.7 to 2.7 and considering the scar height the decrease was from 1.6 to 1.1. The present study showed that the combination of surgical excision and Amniotic membrane placement can be a new alternative in treatment of keloid scar. |
