Abstract

The application of sewage water to environment increases heavy metal content in soil and groundwater. El Gabal El Asfar area suffers from heavy metals accumulation in soil due to extended application of sludgewater since 1911, causing harmful effects to plants, animals and humans through the food chain. Nano zeolite (Z), chitosan and sewage sludge (S.S.) amendments are used for remediation of contaminated soil as the following treatments: (2٪ Z), (1٪ chitosan), (5٪ S.S.), (10٪ S.S.), (5٪ S.S. + 2٪ Z) and (10٪ S.S. + 2٪ Z). Repeated wet and dry cycles are applied to different treatments as well as to control soil sample for 180 days. The DTPA extracts clearly shows a reduction in Cd and Pb solubility of about (56.9 – 94.2) ٪ and (43.2 – 76.8) ٪ of the initial DTPA content, respectively. Also, the sequential extraction demonstrates a change in binding forms to approximately (15.8 – 28.2) ٪ and (2.6 – 5.7) ٪ of the initial content in Cd and Pb, respectively. It is concluded that (nano zeolite) and (chitosan) are the most efficient treatments in remediation of Cadmium and Lead contaminated soil, respectively.
