Abstract Background: Miscarriage is defined as the spontaneous loss of pregnancy less than 20 weeks gestation. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) estimates it is the most common form of pregnancy loss. The miscarriage rate is roughly 15-20% and it is the most common complication of early pregnancy in humans. Aim of the Work: Comparing the success rate of letrozole and misoprostol versus misoprostol alone for medical termination of first trimester pregnancy. Patients and Methods: Type of the Study: A double-blind, randomized, controlled Clinical trial. Study Settings: This clinical trial was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital in the period between April 2018 and September 2018. Study Population: The patients were recruited from women attending outpatient Obstetric clinic or the emergency department of Ain-Shams University Maternity Hospital. Results: This study demonstrated that 7.5mg letrozole for threedays followed by 800 micrograms of vaginal misoprostol is more effective than misoprostol alone for first trimester abortion. In the total of 80 women were recruited. The complete miscarriage rate of the letrozole group was significantly higher than that of the placebo group (77.1% compared with 64.8%). Conclusion: This study suggests that a regimen of letrozole and misoprostol may be useful in medical miscarriage, but the combination with mifepristone is less effective and takes longer. |
