Abstract

Distribution system is the main supplier to feed the load demand by electric energy with acceptable voltage limits. It is affected by the physical nature of the connected loads that cause some technical issues related to active and reactive power losses in addition to the voltage DROP that affects the reliability of the distribution system. The voltage stability index (VSI) is an indication about the voltage level to guarantee the voltage stability under different disturbances. Thus, this index could give the distribution operators information about the closeness of the system to voltage collapse. The voltage instability may cause progressive falls or rises at some buses and, sequentially, cause partial or total blackouts in power systems. The rabid developments in distribution system motivate operators and researchers to invent different ways to improve its performance. One of these ways is using capacitor banks to reduce the power losses, improve voltage profile and enhance VSI. The second way is using the distributed generating (DG) units that are preferred since they provide both active and reactive power to meet the increasing power demand in distribution systems. On the other hand, the intermittent characteristics of DG units, such as wind turbine and photovoltaic, encourage the use of hybrid units or combination of different DG types to achieve better performance.
