Abstract Most surgical procedures involving the kidneys especially donor nephrectomy require adequate knowledge with the renal vascular anatomy and its variants to avoid possible complications. The great advance in imaging technology made this task easier and easier. The emergence of 128-slice MDCTA helped more precise evaluation of the anatomy of renal arteries and veins and their possible variations. In this study, we evaluated the renal vascular anatomy in 54 cases (108 kidneys) using 128-slice MDCTA with all its advantages. For renal arteries, 41 of 54 cases (76%) showed anatomic variants. Among those, 19 cases had accessory renal artery, 20 cases showed early division of renal artery and 2 cases showed precaval renal artery. Twenty-one cases (39%) showed anatomic venous variations including 9 cases with multiple renal veins, 2 cases with late confluence, 7 cases with lumbar tributaries and 3 cases with retroaortic left renal vein.128-slice MDCTA is an excellent imaging modality in the evaluation of normal renal vascular anatomy and variants. The number and course of the renal arteries and veins are easily and accurately delineated with MDCT angiography. Further studies with larger cohort are needed for better evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of such modality. |
