Abstract
The desire to study one of the linguistic issues in the Glorious Qur’an. Bridging the gap in the field of translating near synonymy in the Glorious Qur’an. Near synonyms imply deep meanings that caused a challenge for translators. Aims of the study: Examining the way selected translators render Qur’anic near synonyms in English. Investigating the most appropriate semantic theory that can be applied in order to prove the non-existence of total synonymy in the Glorious Qur’an. Highlighting the most suitable translation strategy that translators may adopt while translating Qur’anic near synonyms. Contents of the study: The study was divided into five chapters: Chapter One offered an overall introduction to the study and specified some basic elements, such as: the problem of the study, the objectives of the study, the questions of the study and the organization of chapters. Chapter Two dealt with the phenomenon of synonymy. It was divided into four main sections. The 1st section discussed the nature of synonymy in English. The 2nd section highlighted the opinions held by Arab linguists, both classical and modern, towards the phenomenon of synonymy. The 3rd section explored the opinions of advocates and non-advocates of synonymy in the Glorious Qur’an. The 4th section introduced componential analysis as a linguistic theory and as a translation strategy. Chapter Three was divided into three sections. The 1st section presented the corpus of the study. The 2nd section introduced selected translators. The 3rd section provided the steps that shall be followed in the analysis of the corpus. Chapter Four provided an analysis to 21 items of near synonyms. Chapter Five offered the conclusion of the study and some recommendations for further research.
