Abstract

This is a retrospective study included formalin fixed paraffin embedded blocks of sixty two lymph node specimens. These specimens were divided into two groups: neoplastic group including 52 specimens of NHL and non-neoplastic group including 10 specimens of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia.
We proposed this study to assess the significance of MVD as a measure of angiogenesis in NHL. Our goal was to evaluate the validity of MVD determination to pave the way for its use for application of therapeutic strategies targeting angiogenesis.
We hypothesize that MVD is higher in NHL than in reactive hyperplasia. We expect subtype specific pattern of correlation between MVD and aggressive clinical behavior and cytologic atypia.
Immunohistochemical staining of slides of these specimens with CD31 antibodies(as an endothelial marker) and Ki67 antibodies (as a marker for proliferation index) was performed.
Our study demonstrates thatMVD was significantly higher in cases with NHL in comparison to those with reactive follicular hyperplasia and mean MVD showed a statistically significant difference between different types of NHL.
In this study we found a weak positive significant correlation between mean MVD and Ki67 level in all NHL cases (regardless of the type). However, mean MVD was not related to degree of aggressiveness of each type of NHL separately.
As regards the clinical and demographic data of the cases, only age of the patients and clinical presentation of lymphadenopathy had significant differences between NHL group and reactive hyperplasia group and no correlation was found between mean MVD and these clinical and demographic data.
