Abstract MRI has become the best modality for imaging patients with painful wrist joint diseases due to its unique capability to evaluate osseous lesions and soft tissues compartment. MRI of the wrist is challenging because of the overall small size of critical structures like carpal bones, tendons and ligaments. Many painful wrist conditions were undiagnosed by conventional radiology and needs further MRI evaluation . There for, MRI provides typical anatomic information making it an ideal modality to detect the causes of many wrist joint pathologies such as : occult fractures, soft tissue masses like ganglion cysts, Avascular necrosis (AVN) , Triangular Fibrocartilage (TFCC) tears, ligamentous tears, DRUJ subluxation, rheumatoid arthritis, tenosynovitis and Carpal tunnel syndrome. This study included 50 patients (29 Males, 21 Female ), complained from painful wrist joint . MRI examination was performed in all cases and 75 wrist joint pathologies were detected, and classified as following: Joint Lesions representing 68 % , bone lesions in 48% , ligament and tendon lesions in 28% and nerve lesions in 6% . So, we can conclude that MRI is a non-invasive tool and the modality of choice in assessment of painful wrist joint diseases which are often difficult to diagnose with alternative or conventional modalities due to its high soft tissue contrast resolution, and multiplanar capabilities. It is particularly advantageous for assessing occult bone lesions and soft tissue structures around the wrist such as cartilages, tendons, ligaments and nerves. |
