Abstract

In this study, we analyzed the existence of psychological and behavioral disorders associated with dyslalia. The bibliographical references related to the subject are scarce and little recent different authors point out that there is an association between dyslalia and psychological and behavioral patterns of those children.
The purpose of this study was to discover whether children with dyslalia differed significantly from children without dyslalia in there psychological and behavioral patterns or not.
The present work is a case-control study that was conducted in the Phoniatrics Unit of Assiut University Hospital, from October 2016 to November 2017.
The total studied sample was 80 subjects divided according to the type of dyslalia: 16 subjects with stigmatism, 16 subjects with rotacism, 16 subjects with lack of distinction between anterior and posterior sounds, 16 subjects with lack of distinction between voicing and devoicing sounds and 16 with mixed types of dyslalia (2 types). The subjects comprising the control group (N=50) were recruited from the relatives of the studied children. They were free from speech, language or physical disorders. They were matched with the children who had dyslalia for age (6-18 yrs.), socioeconomic status and gender.
All the subjects in the study and the control groups have undergone elementary diagnostic procedures (patients’ and parents’ interview, auditory perceptual assessment (APA) of speech, and general and full ENT examination) and clinical diagnostic aids (audiological assessment, language assessment, articulation test, psychometric evaluation, and psychological and behavioral evaluation).
The main results of the study were:
1. The majority of the studied children and adolescents with dyslalia (61.3%) were males and aged between six and less than ten years old.
2. There are significantly higher percentage of children with dyslalia have abnormal delinquent behavior, competence score, activities and school scores than the control groups.
3. There is significantly higher mean scores in nearly all the domains of the CBCL (except for anxious/depression and social scores). However their scores (the scores of the dyslalia group) did not reach the abnormal range.
4. Correlation analysis between the CBCL scores and the age showed that withdrawn and anxious/depressed scores were significantly increased with age.
5. There is a significant higher percentage of children with lack of distinction between voicing and devoicing sounds and mixed types of dyslalia having abnormal withdrawn scores than other types of dyslalia.
6. There is significantly higher mean scores among mixed type of dyslalia than other types of dyslalia.
