Abstract
Distal radius fracture is a common fracture in elderly patients with minor trauma leading to pain, swelling, limited movement and severe tenderness with or without neurovascular complication. Fractures of the distal radius in elderly patients are often associated with metaphyseal defects that can lead to collapse, mal-union and therefore decreased function. Our study is an alternative approach to simple reduction. It involves filling the defects with materials that can provide structural support. This study was conducted on thirty patients diagnosed as DRF, according to clinical examination and radiological investigation. After preparation and consent, all patients have been exposed to closed reduction and k-wire fixation and then dorsal incision with bone substitute followed by cast.
During the follow up period, clinical evaluation revealed significant improvement in pain, movement and grip strength. Mayo wrist score has shown satisfactory recorded values with 40% excellent and 6o% good.
After reviewing the result, it is clear that our study and other publications addressing close reduction and pinning fixation with bone substitute in elderly patients are safe, efficient, short time procedure, with minimal blood loss, good post- operative outcome and less hospital stay post- operative.
