Abstract

Objectives:
- Against this background, this dissertation takes some steps in the field of translation investigating the importance of translator’s ideology causing the cultural manipulation of the English text in Arabic translation.
- Identify and analyze the manipulation of the original text in translations by focusing on the concept of Ideology as a key term in the analysis of the translation.
Results:
- It has been concluded that Hermeneutics is a tightly related approach to the topic of Cultural Manipulation and it is one of the finest approaches through which a text can be understood comprehensively considering the author’s ideology. The study revealed that Dr. Enani adopted the hermeneutic technique when he translated Shelley’s “Alastor” and this has been observed in his translation. Hermeneutics helped him to avoid cultural manipulations, or in other words adopting the hermeneutic approach in translation helped him to consciously avoid manipulations. On the other hand, Ali Mahmoud Taha in his translation of Shelley’s ”To a skylark”, did not keep the form of the original text. He committed deliberately lots of manipulations on the level of Form. It has been observed that he was affected by his cultural background, and unconsciously reflected his views, values, and his love of nature and beauty in his translation.
- The dissertation has found that that main cultural reasons of manipulation are Form and Technical aspects, Imagery, and the Idiomatic expressions, and the most important Ideological reasons are Beliefs, Religion, and Gender i.e., (Being a male or a female) it has been found that it can affect the process of translation. The study holds an analytical comparative analysis of the source text of Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure and the given Arabic translation Daqah bi Daqah by Dr.Enani. Though Shakespeare introduces a polemic to his readers to give them the chance to evaluate and decide whether the hero is guilty or not, Enani consciously manipulates the source text, damages the polemic and converts the hero into an innocent person who faces injustice to raise his readers’ sympathy. Enani’s manipulation is described as conscious because of his great cultural and educational background. He managed to understand the source text, but he sympathized with the hero. That manipulation conducted due to an ideological reason, namely Religion.
