Abstract

This thesis sheds light on postmodern perspectives through selected works of two prominent novelists, Erskine Caldwell (1903) and Son ’Allah Ibrahim (born 1937) .
The thesis is divided into four chapters, in addition to the introduction and the conclusion. The first chapter is entitled, ”Postmodernism: Definition, characteristics and Major Figures .
Chapter two entitled, ”Artistic Development of Son’Allah Ibrahim and Erskine Caldwell”, discusses their major works, the main themes of their novels and how both of them share postmodern perspectives.
chapter three through Ibrahim’s Zaat , and Erskine Caldwell’s You Have Seen Their Faces and Tobacco Road. You Have Seen Their Faces mainly tackles the problems of the poor whites in the South of America and the inhuman life which the blacks lead.
The fourth chapter handles the idea of rebellion which is tackled through Caldwell’s God’s Little Acre and Ibrahim’s The Smell of it, and The Committee as a clear feature of Postmodernism. Caldwell exposes the Southern life in America as a Waste Land which includes every bad thing. There is social degradation which is represented by Ty Ty who digs the land searching for gold instead of farming it.
The conclusion summarizes briefly what the researcher tries to prove through the thesis which is the fact that there are Postmodern features exist in the works of Erskine Caldwell and Son ’Allah Ibrahim , there are similarities and differences between the two writers.
