Abstract

Internet addiction (IA) is considered one of most serious public health problems in the recent decade especially among adolescents and college students. It has negative consequences on psychosocial skills, poor academic achievement also poor life satisfaction and quality of students’ life. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of internet addiction and its influence on quality of life, social skills and academic achievement among students of Technical Institute of Nursing. Subjects & Method: the study was based on descriptive cross-sectional correlational research design. The study was achieved through using the following tools; socio demographics characteristics, Young’s internet addiction scale (IAS), Quality of life questionnaire (QOL), Social skills tool and total grade of students in previous semester. This study was conducted at Technical Institute of Nursing, Mansoura University. Subjects of study included 341students at Technical Institute of Nursing from both sexes through random assignment from first and second academic years. Results: results revealed that prevalence of internet addiction among students was 16.1%, 64.0% of students had high quality of life, 59.1% of them with average social skills. Additionally, results showed significant negative correlation between IA and quality of life, and significant positive correlation between social skills and quality of life. Recommendation: Educational programs should be arranged at universities to orient college students about harms of inappropriate internet use. Future research should examine risk factors for IA disorder and use evidence based practice in prevention programs.
