Abstract

The selection of the construction contractor is one of the most difficult decisions that is performed in the construction industry. This decision is not simple and is a multi-criteria decision that requires a lot of concentration and efforts to perform. This issue has been of interest for many decades and remains a contemporary subject because of the rapid modernization of construction project management. Therefore, this research aims to achieve three objectives; first: Determine the important criteria for the selection of contractors in the Egyptian construction industry, secondly: Determine the relative weights of the selection criteria to give decision makers flexibility and control of the selection criteria for any project, thirdly: Improve the level of performance in the selection of contractors. This research consisted of six chapters. The following is summary of these chapters: 1. Chapter One (Introduction) included introduction about the study, objectives of the study, reasons why this study was performed, scope, limitation and significance of this study. 2. Chapter Two (Literature review) involved information about the bidding process, the criteria for the contractor selection, the different methodologies employed for the selection, the general information about the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and its procedures for the implementation, and general information about analytical network process (ANP). 180 | 3. Chapter Three (Research methodology) described how the objectives of the study will be attained. 4. Chapter Four (Data analysis and results) involved an analysis of the questionnaire survey received from Multi Engineering agency, and displays the findings of the research. 5. Chapter Five (Analysis by AHP) involved the development of the theoretical model for the selection of the construction contractor using the expert choice software which in turn depends entirely on the analytical hierarchy process. 6. Chapter Six (Analysis by ANP and Compression Study) developing another model for the selection of an appropriate construction contractor based on an analytical Network process (ANP), and make a comparative study between analytical Network process (ANP) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). 7. Chapter Seven (Conclusion & Recommendations) This model assists in deriving the prioritization of the different criteria considered in the selection. The results related to the first objective of the research indicated that the open bidding system is the most widely implemented during the selection of the construction contractor. Another notable finding indicated that most of owners in awarding contracts depend entirely on the lowest price. Moreover, the current process used to award a contract will result in the selection of an inappropriate contractor. The findings related to objective number two of the study display that fifteen criteria were determined and considered in the selection. The relative importance of each criterion was determined through conducting a pair-wise comparison. The third objective of the research was achieved through using the data acquired from the questionnaire survey as an input to the proposed model. The developed model based entirely on the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), and the expert choice software was used to establish that model. USE Analytical Network processes ANP to develop another model and makes a comparative study between (ANP) and (AHP).
