Abstract

Anemia is a public health problem affecting both developing and developed countries all over the world, with the highest prevalence is among infants aged 6months -2 years. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia in the world. It is a worldwide nutritional problem, affecting all age groups and all socio-economic levels of society. It is a common disease in Egypt, with a very high prevalence rate. Identification of infants and children who are at risk for IDA is vital as it impairs growth and psychomotor development and reduces physical activity and resistance to infection.
The aim of this work was to compare efficacy and compliance to iron formulations: Micro-dispersed iron and lactoferrin in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children aged 2-6 years.
In order to achieve these objectives, this work was conducted on 100 infants aged 2 - 6 years attending AUCH. Demographic information included age. Dietary assessment included type of food supplementation and daily iron intake. All the infants and children presented by hypochromic microcytic anemia in CBC were further evaluated by SF, SI and TIBC levels.
The results of the present study shows that there is a statistically significant difference concerning the rise in Hb, serum iron and serum ferritin between Micro-dispersed iron group and lactoferrin group where the rise in there levels was more in the First group.
