Abstract

Harmonic are considered as one of the power quality problems. The increasing of the photovoltaic (PV) systems penetration requires study of their effects on the grid’s power quality. Connecting of PV systems to the grid generates harmonics. Therefore, power quality standards regulate the effects of such grid-tied PV system. So, in the present study the grid-tide PV system is investigated. This thesis aims to analysis of the effects of photovoltaic systems harmonic on the electrical grid. So, the thesis starts with investigation of the effect of PV on the harmonic distortion of the system. The harmonics are briefly analysed in the system and discussed. This needs an appropriate simulation of PV system. PSCAD/EMTDC is used in this study. Passive filtering is simplest convention for harmonic mitigation in power system. A single construction can serve many purposes, such as compensation of reactive power, power factor improvement and reducing harmonic distortion. It is found that the LCL-filter can reduce most of harmonic to an accepted limit. However, the 5th current harmonic cannot be reduced. Therefore, in this thesis, a simple single-tuned low cost filter is introduced. The proposed filter is based on the mitigation of the 5th harmonic. The proposed filter is based on simplicity of design and aiming for reducing the passive components for lowering the filter cost. The results confirm the validity of the proposed filter for wide rating of PV systems.
