Abstract

A 42 day’s comparison study was carried out to evaluate the effect of nano selenium to different selenium sources on performance, immunity, antioxidant activity and carcass traits in broilers. A one-day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks (n=156) were randomly allocated into four groups each of three replicates. The first group (G1) served as the control group fed the basal diet (corn-soya based diet) without selenium supplementation. The second group (G2) was supplemented with sodium selenite. The third group (G3) was supplemented with seleno-methionine. The fourth group (G4) supplemented with nano selenium. G2, G3 and G4 were supplemented with dietary Se at the level of 0.3 mg/kg diet. The results revealed significant (p<0.05) improvement on most of the performance parameters of nano selenium at level of 0.3 mg/kg diet. Nano selenium and seleno-methionine achieved the best dressing %, spleen index % and thymus index %. Concerning to internal organ indices, none of these indices was significantly (p<0.05) affected by different Se sources under our experimental conditions. A numerical, non-significant, improvement in glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were observed only for the broilers fed on the nano selenium. Serum IL-6 and TNF-α showed significant (p<0.05) decrease in nano selenium supplemented group compared to other groups. In case of serum IL-10 level, a significant (p<0.05) increase was reported in nano selenium supplemented group followed by G3 then G2. There were no statistical (p<0.05) differences in the serum ALT and AST levels among all experimental groups. There were also no statistical (p<0.05) differences in the serum total protein, albumin concentration, serum creatinine level and uric acid concentration among experimental groups.
