Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major health problem and HCC is closely associated with HCV infection and chronic HCV. Low survival of HCC patients is attributed to late diagnosis, tumor recurrence, and metastasis thus novel biomarkers for early diagnosis are urgently needed.Currently screening strategies include a combination of ultrasound and α-fetoprotein (AFP)MiRNAs are potential diagnostic markers for cancer. Studies have reported the detection of miRNAs in many tumor tissues. In addition, circulating miRNAs are potential markers for the diagnosis and prognosis of many diseases. Abnormal expression of serum miR-21 has been confirmed in many malignant tumors Our study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of serum miRNA-21 in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma compared to liver cirrhosis in patients with chronic HCV .This study was conducted on 100 patients, 50 patients with HCC on top of HCV diagnosed by abdominal US and CT and 50 patients with HCV-related cirrhosis diagnosed by compatible clinical, laboratory and radiological features. Patients were selected from clinic of Hepatology and Gastroenterology unit, Internal Medicine Department, Mansoura University Hospital. In our study, serum micro RNA level has no statistically significant difference between patient with HCC and patient with liver cirrhosis While AFP was significantiy higher in HCC patients compared to cirrhotic group. AFP seems to be predictor for diagnosis of HCC.
