Abstract

The thesis aims at discussing the identity crisis from a cultural perspective through the main themes of Iyad Gharib’s plays ”The Shame” of What and ”The Hidden Hands.” This thesis deals with the role of religion, violence and capitalism in building cultural identity, as well as racism, prejudice, greed and fear of Islam And the loss of Islamic identity and gender inequality. The research also seeks to explore the conflict between the culture of the majority and that of minorities. It is clear that the central idea in the plays chosen is the loss of Islamic identity in America. This idea draws the reader’s attention to the issue of Islamic beliefs In the post-September 11 United States, during the search for identity and the attempt to integrate with the culture of the majority, some immigrants are dissociating themselves from all that links them to their mother culture. This study thus depicts the shortcomings of the American society in dealing with other cultures coming to its land. A balanced life In addition, the research discusses the consequences of postmodern religious questioning as well as the connection between the extinction of many of the moral values experienced by most postmodern societies and the collective loss of many religious beliefs.
