Abstract

Curcumin the active component of turmeric is widely used in treatment of many human diseases including cancer due to its antioxidant and anticancer properties. The present study aimed to extract curcumin from Curcuma longa and investigate its antioxidant and anticancer activity through inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) in HepG2 cells. The proliferation of HepG2 cells was performed by using MTT assay. In addition, cell cycle analysis was assessed by using flow-cytometric technique. The antioxidant activity of curcumin is also determined. The structure of the extracted curcumin was confirmed by FTIR. Our results showed that curcumin had antioxidant activity with IC50 of 3.7±0.20 μg/ml. In addition curcumin had the ability to inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 cells with IC50 value of 24.79 μg/ml and induced G2/M cell cycle arrest.
