Abstract

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe progressive disease with high mortality and morbidity, ultimately leading to elevated pulmonary vascular resistance, right heart failure and death. The increased pulmonary blood flow in congenital heart disease (CHD) with left to right shunts induces endothelial cell injury, apoptosis and increases pulmonary arterial pressure, eventually triggering the neointimal development and pulmonary vascular remodeling. Therefore, PAH increasingly arises in pediatric patients with CHD.
Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is involved in normal physical conditions, but also participates in pathological processes such as angiogenesis and wound healing, as well as extracellular matrix production, adhesion, proliferation and apoptosis. It is highly expressed in myocardial fibroblasts and is responsible for fibrosis, apoptosis and remodeling.
The objectives of this work were to evaluate the plasma levels of CTGF in children with PAH-CHD to examine its relationship to pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension, to assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of CTGF, and to correlate its levels with various clinical and echocardiographic data of PAH-CHD in these patients.
