Pediatric liver transplantation (LT) is the treatment of choice for pediatric liver diseases causing acute liver failure or progressing to end-stage liver disease. Aim of the study: was to assess self-care activities for children undergoing liver transplantation. Design: A descriptive research design was utilized. Settings: This study was conducted at the National Liver Institute, Menoufia University Hospital, Shibin El-Kom City and Center of Gastrointestinal and Liver Surgery Mansoura University, Mansoura City. Sample: A purposive sample of 32 children undergoing liver transplantation and their caregivers. Tools for data collection: A structured interviewing questionnaire and observational checklist based on Orem’s Self-care. Results: More than two fifthes of the studied children aged between 6 < 9 years and more than half of them were males. More than three quarters of children suffered from liver disease after one year from birth. The majority of children can do simple activities before LT. Meanwhile, more than two fifths of them their activities were improved after transplantation. Less than two thirds of children had poor knowledge about LT before surgery. But after surgery, more than half of them had average knowledge regarding LT. Conclusion: The present study concluded that, children had wholly compensatory self-care activities before LT, but improved after surgery. There were no statistical significant relation between children personal characteristic and their self-care requisites. There were a highly statistical significant relation between total children knowledge and their self-care requisites. Recommendation: Designing training program regarding knowledge and self-care activities for children and their caregivers undergoing liver transplantation to improve their knowledge and self-care activities.
