Abstract

Purpose: to assess if serum total and free testosterone could be used as a marker for the severity of preeclampsia when compared to control group.
Materials and methods: A case control study conducted in Ain Shams Maternity Hospital between October 2017 and June 2018 included 25 normotensive pregnant women ,25 women with mild preeclampsia and 25 women with severe preeclampsia. Maternal levels of serum total and free testosterone were measured in the three groups and compared. We followed the recommended standards of the 2015 List of Essential Items for Reporting Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (STARD 2015)
Results:
The mean values of serum total and free testosterone were significantly higher in women with severe preeclampsia when compared with normotensive and mild preeclamptic women as the p value for serum total testosterone was ˂0.0001 and the p valur for serum free testosterone was 0.001
Conclusion:
Serum total testosterone and free testosterone were significantly higher in women with severe pre-eclampsia when compared to women with mild preeclampsia and normal pregnancy. Serum total and free testosterone were independent predictors for severe preeclampsia.
