Abstract

In recent years, the need to shear reinforcement alternativeshas been increased to satisfy workability, simplicity and other construction requirements such as in bridges’ beams which have crowded shear reinforcement.Nowadays, most of researchers direct their attention tofindappropriate and economical alternatives to traditional stirrups. This study attempts to understand the shear behavior of R.C beams having swimmer bars. Fifteen reinforced concrete beams of cross-section 150 mm width, 300 mm overall thickness and 1400 mm total length were fabricated and tested under three point loads.Shear spanto depth ratio was kept constant for all tested beams. Two of them were fabricated with stirrups as control beams while, the others were fabricated with swimmer bars to study the effect of different parameters; area of web shear reinforcement, type of tying of swimmer bars, compressive concrete strength and lap splice length of swimmer bars on shear behavior of tested beams.
The results showed that, the effectiveness of the proposed technique of shear reinforcement in both the ultimate and the serviceability limit state. In addition, swimmer bars could reduce the effect of the existing cracks and deflection values. Also, bars increase beams capacities for ultimate load and shear resistance Swimmer.
