Abstract twelve participants with severely resorbed mandibles and persistent denture problems received new maxillary and mandibular conventional dentures (control, CD). After 3 months, two implants were inserted in canine region of the mandible. In a quasi-random method, overdentures were connected to the implants with either bar attachments (BOD)or resilient telescopic attachments(TOD) or locator attachment (LOD). Chewing efficiency in terms of unmixed fraction (UF) was measured using chewing gum (after 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 strokes), and Measurements were performed after using each of the following prostheses: CD, BOD, TOD and LOD. By the same patient. Results : For each chewing cycle, there was a significant difference in UF between groups. CD recorded significant lower chewing efficiency compared to the other groups No significant difference in chewing efficiency between BOD, TOD, LOD was noted Although no significant difference between implant retained overdentures groups were noted, BOD recorded the lowest chewing efficiency followed by TOD and LOD recorded the highest chewing efficiency. |
