Abstract

Medical students are different from any other university students as they are trained and prepared to be physicians and accordingly will bear a huge responsibility. During their study years, medical students face a huge amount of knowledge and skills that they are obliged to acquire. Therefore, there is no surprise that they are highly prone to exhaustion, depersonalization and consequently burnout. However, it doesn’t stop here as there is strong evidence that burned out students are more prone to depression, decreased academic performance, failing, dropping out their studies, drug addiction and even attempting suicide.
Student engagement has been linked to positive student wellbeing, increased motivation, improved academic performance and increased academic and professional efficacy. It’s evident that highly engaged students are more motivated and less burned out. They look forward to their studies and they are actively engaged in the extracurricular activities offered in their universities.
This study is a cross-sectional analytical study that was conducted to assess student engagement and its relationship with burnout syndrome in undergraduate medical students. The sample size included 300 stratified randomly selected participants from our target population which included the undergraduate medical students in both preclinical and clinical years at the Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University. Both the UWES-S and MBI-SS instruments were used in the study as self-administered anonymous questionnaires.
Summary | 110

In addition, it also investigated the relationship between student engagement and student burnout and their subscales. UWES-S questionnaire was used to measure the prevalence of student engagement while the MBI-SS questionnaire was used to measure the prevalence of burnout. Both instruments were tested for reliability and both were found to be valid and reliable instruments.
