Abstract

This study was an attempt to investigate the effectiveness of using a proposed program based on the content-based instruction approach accompanied with documentaries and authentic videos for developing the listening comprehension and speaking skills and checking whether the suggested program helped to enhance students’ motivation towards studying English among first year secondary school students. The study questions: The problem of the study can be stated in the following questions: 1- To what extent does the proposed authentic content-based program enhance the EFL listening comprehension skills of the 1St year secondary students in the governmental language schools? 2- To what extent does the proposed authentic content-based program enhance the EFL speaking skills of the 1St year secondary students in the governmental language schools? 3- To what extent does the proposed authentic content-based program enhance the motivation for studying English of the 1St year secondary students in the governmental language schools? Participants: The participants were two intact classes of first year secondary school students in governmental language schools representing the experimental group and the control group. Their age ranges from 14-15 years old. Instruments: Three tools were prepared and administered by the researcher: 1- A listening comprehension test: the researcher designed two equivalent forms of the listening comprehension test as a pre- and a posttest. 2- A speaking test that is designed by the researcher in the light of the related literature. It aims at assessing the fluency and accuracy of the students. 3-A motivation scale: the researcher designed a motivation scale that measures the motivation for studying English after reviewing the related literature and valid motivation scales. Procedures: 1- Pre-tests: A listening comprehension pre-test, a speaking pre-test, and a motivation scale were administered to the control and experimental groups. 2- Implementing the proposed content-based instruction program to the experimental group. The researcher taught the content-based instruction program to the experimental group supported by the use of documentaries and authentic videos. The experiment was applied during the school year 2016/2017. Each session started with a documentary that presented a topic to serve as a content on which listening and speaking activities were based. 3- Post-tests: a speaking post-test, a listening comprehension posttest and the motivation scale were administered to the control and experimental groups. 4- Analyzing the results, interpreting them and drawing conclusions.
