Abstract

This study conducted using 36 healthy ewes in peri-parturient period ranged 1.5 years to 3 years old from the date of 1/7/2017 to 1/7/2018. These ewes selected from Sohag Governorate, Al-kawhtar farm. All animals were at the last month of pregnancy. Clinical examination of studied ewes revealed that these ewes of good body condition, rosy red mucus membrane, normal temperature, pulse and respiratory rate and absence of any external parasites. Blood and fecal samples collected at 3rd and 1st weeks before lambing and 1st week of after lambing. Blood samples divided into plasma and serum. On plasma sample of these ewes glucose level measured, on serum sample of these ewes BHBA, NEFA, TP, Albumin and liver enzymes (AST and GGT) estimated. On each fecal sample of these ewes, examination for fasciola and coccidia eggs conducted for detection of ewes with parasitic infestation and excluded from the studied groups The results of the biochemical analysis revealed that there was a significant decrement in glucose, TP, AST and GGT levels in the 3rd and 1st weeks before lambing when compared to first week after lambing and they begin to increase except albumin still low. Furthermore, there was a significant increment in the levels of albumin and NEFA before lambing and then decreased after lambing while, there was a significant decrement in the level of BHBA before lambing and increased after lambing in examined cases. Plasma glucose had a negative correlation with NEFA and BHBA, NEFA had positive correlation with serum BHBA, AST and GGT and it had negative correlation with serum TP and plasma glucose level and TP had positive correlation with plasma glucose and serum albumin. There was a decrease in glucose, TP and liver enzymes (AST and GGT) levels in twin bearing ewes when compared to single bearing ewes while, there was an increment in the level of NEFA, BHBA in twin bearing ewes when compared to single bearing ewes.
