Abstract A system consisting of an antenna array and an adaptive processor can perform beam steering and adjusting the pattern parameters towards a desired one. The research work done in this thesis deals with the generation of scanned super-directive antenna array patterns. The thesis reports on a new technique for realization of adaptive arrays, which makes use of super-directive array functions. The technique improves array sensitivity and increases the Signal-to-Noise-Ratio through the utilization of the narrow main beam combined with low Side Lobe Levels. Commonly used control methods, described in this thesis, include the Least Mean Square (LMS), the Differential Steepest Descent (DSD) algorithm and the Linear Random Search (LRS) algorithm. A comparison of their characteristics is prescribed. Based on the designed super-directive array functions, the adaptive processor unit, using a suitable algorithm, will determine how the pattern forming network should be adjusted in order to make the array output pattern identical to the desired one |
