Abstract This qualitative- quantitative study investigates how certain linguistic choices made by Ernest Hemingway in light of Halliday’s Transitivity System throughout his novel A Farewell to Arms help to emphasize the themes of war, love, loss and reality vs. fantasy. It aims at investigating what aspects of ideational meanings are represented and to what extent do these choices and meanings highlight the themes of the novel. Further, it proves that a linguistic study of literary works offers much more understanding of texts and contexts as well as the intended meanings and the ideology of the author. The analysis is carried out to examine the structures of clauses under consideration. Processes types, participants’ role and circumstances are identified. Findings of the study reveals that the most frequent process type in the novel is material process followed by relational then mental and existential and finally verbal and behavioral processes. Such findings indicates that the frequency usage of the process types helps to highlight the dominated themes of the novel which in turn represents Hemingway’s ideology, the effect of war on economic, social, and political conditions. Also, it offers us a live broadcast of people’s life and the environment surrounding them and asserts the author’s own negative attitude toward war. Keywords: Systemic Functional Grammar, Transitivity, A Farewell to Arms, processes, participants, circumstances. |
