Abstract Bronchial asthma is a common chronic illness of childhood. The World Health Organization has estimated that 15 million DALYs are lost annually due to asthma, representing 1% of the total global disease burden. The dramatic increase in allergic diseases has been witnessed during the last half century in the urbanized and industrialized regions of the world. The differences between the prevalence of asthma in urban and rural areas have been documented worldwide, suggesting that environmental factors play a major role in asthma development. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of bronchial asthma among primary school students in urban and rural areas. The study was conducted on 600 primary school students between 8 and 12 years of age, 300 in Alexandria representing the urban area and 300 in Kafr El Sheikh representing the rural area. The study was conducted by using a written ISAAC standardized questionnaire and a modified version of the Weil Corneil Medicine environmental survey questionnaire. |
