Abstract

The present study was planned to study 2 stages of lung development, saccular and alveolar stage and to induce a model of abnormal lung development by a known toxic agent, nicotine, then evaluating role of petroselinum crispum as a protective agent against toxic effects of nicotine. Thirty (30) adult female albino rats aged 3 months old of average weight of 170gm, and about 60 of their male offspring were used in this study. They were kept overnight with adult male rats, after confirmation of being pregnant. They were allowed to acclimatize until sixth day of gestational period. On the seventh day, the pregnant rats were classified into four groups;
group I (control): This group composed of six pregnant rats, they were kept without any treatment all through the experiment and considered as control for all groups.
group II (sham control):This group composed of six pregnant rats injected with 1ml distilled water subcutaneously daily from seventh day of gestation until weaning (21 days after birth).
group III (parsley group): This group composed of six pregnant rats given parsley seeds extract orally by a gastric tube at a dose of 5 mg/kg (0,85mg per rat) from the seventh day of gestation until weaning (21 days after birth).
group IV (nicotine exposed group): This group composed of six pregnant rats injected subcutaneously daily with nicotine in a dose of 1mg/kg (0.17mg/rat) starting from seventh day of gestation until weaning.
