Abstract

Family physicians provide broad-base, long term, medical and psychiatric care to their elderly patients . A comprehensive approach to care gives understanding to how individual patients function in the family, the home and the community. Aim &Objectives: The aim of this study was toimprove the role of family physician in providing comprehensive geriatric care in family health units In Sharkia governoratethrough the following objectives: 1-To determine the level of the family physicians’ knowledge & practice about comprehensive geriatric care in family health units. 2-To apply health education and training program to improve knowledge and practice of family physicians 3-To evaluate the effect of health education and training program on the knowledge & practice of the family physicians. Subjects &Methods:Study design:an interventional study. Study setting:in 32 family health units in Sharkia governorate (10 accredited and 22 non accredited). Study subjects:health care providers (56 physicians) working in these family health units . Data were collected through: 1-Structured pre &post test questionnaire for family physicians for assessment of their level of knowledge towards comprehensive geriatric care. 2- Observational pre &post test check list for performance of physicians. 3-The educational message was supported by power point presentation and open discussion. 4-Training program was conducted through role play in two sessions. Results: Most of physicians in all units had satisfactory level of knowledge as regards physical problems and family health centers services. But most of them had unsatisfactory level of knowledge regarding elderly abuse and geriatric assessment. There was improvement in the results of pre and post test as regard the total knowledge,with (51%) of improvement in accredited units and (49.3%) of improvement in non-accredited units. Most of physicians had unsatisfactory level of performance.There was improvement in the results of pre and post test as regard all items of the performance of physicians with (68.9%) of improvement in accredited units and (68.2%) of improvement in non-accredited units.
