Abstract

Occupational health and safety is one of the most important aspects of human concern. Aim: to assess occupational health and safety awareness among secondary industrial technical education students in Port Said City. Research design: A descriptive cross sectional research design was utilized. Settings: The study was conducted at three secondary industrial technical schools in Port Said city, these were Al-Shahid Tayar Rafaeat Albureau Alsinaeia, Gamal Abd El-Naser Al-thanawia Al-sinaeia for boys, Port Fouad Al-Bahria for boys. Sample: all students from the two classes chosen randomly from each selected secondary industrial technical school, with total number of (133students) were included in the study. Tools: three tools were used, first, occupational health hazards & safety questionnaire: Second: occupational health hazards and safety attitude scale third: Reported practice questionnaire. Results: 52.6% of the students aged17 <18 , 87.2 % of them not received any training courses on occupational health& safety ,76.7% knew about occupational health and safety, 77.4% didn’t know what the general precautions for occupational health and safety, 27.1%, worrying about getting an occupational illness, only 15.0% of them were wearing personal protective equipment. Conclusion: Almost all 98.5% of the studied sample had unsatisfactory knowledge, two thirds 66.9% had positive attitude and 80.5 % had inadequate practices regarding occupational health and safety, A highly statistically significant association was found between knowledge and practice & knowledge and attitude. Recommendations: It was recommended to carry out a regular health education training sessions in their curriculum to raise their knowledge and practices in the occupational health and safety aspects. Further research studies using large probability samples at different settings is highly recommended
