Abstract

Background: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) are common form of permanent hemodialysis vascular access. Pain and anxiety during arteriovenous fistula (AVF) cannulation remain a common problem for hemodialysis patients. Cryotherapy is generally named as cold application which is a simple and cheap treatment. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effect of cryotherapy application on pain and anxiety during puncture of arteriovenous fistula among hemodialysis patients. Materials and Method: Quasi–experimental design was conducted on 48 patients undergoing hemodialysis selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Tools: Structured interview sheet, pain scores was assessed by using objective and subjective pain scale and Beck Inventory Anxiety scale was used to assess anxiety level. Results: showed statistically significant reduction of both pain scores and anxiety level after the application of cryotherapy. Conclusion: The study concluded that there was an effective effect of cryotherapy on reducing pain and anxiety level associated with AVF cannulation. Recommendations: It was recommended that cryotherapy technique applied inside hemodialysis units to reduce pain and anxiety related- needle puncture.
