Abstract
This study was conducted on 196 patients suffering from medically unexplained physical symptoms. The aim of this study was to describe the present biological, psychological and social characteristics of the patients with medically unexplained symptoms and possible associations between them. Patients have been selected based on the following inclusion and exclusion criteria:
Inclusion Criteria:
1. Age: between 18 to 60 years
2. Patients presenting with MUPS ≥ 3months
3. Informed and written consent from the patient.
Exclusion Criteria:
1. Pregnant females.
2. Chronic debilitating diseases.
3. Immunocompromised patient
4. Current medical condition fully contributes to the presenting symptoms.
5. Active substance or alcohol abuse or dependence.
6. Psychosis.
Methods:
1. Clinical Interview to collect socio-demographic, medical, psychiatric, drug and family history.
2. The Arabic Version for Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-15, to assess presence of the somatic symptoms and their severity.
3. The Arabic Version for Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-9, to screen for symptoms of depression.
4. The Arabic Version for Generalized Anxiety Disorder GAD-7, as a screening tool measures symptoms of anxiety.
5. Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I). Clinical Version (SCID-CV) Module A and F, to assess presence of depression episodes and anxiety disorders respectively
