Abstract

The present thesis aims to provide a brief overview of forensic linguistics and its applications in some Jordanian police investigations; this is an attempt to explore the role of language in face-to-face interactions between police officers and suspects or criminals and to the importance of a policeman’s acquaintance with some of the forensic linguistics principles during their daily work. It also aims to highlight the advantages of applying linguistic theories in conducting police investigations from forensic linguistic perspective. The researcher used some Jordanian police interviews of a Murder Cases which brought from Cassation Court records as an example (Murder Case No-JP-ID-PF- 9/1/84 Date 19/02/2007) and (Murder Case No-JP-MD-PF- 9/1/47 Date 06/09/2010) the researcher read and analyzed suspects interviews through Grice’s(1975) Maxims (the logic of conversation). By doing so, this thesis explores to what extent the police officers in Jordan are aware of the proper interview techniques and methods required in legal process. The results show that some of them may not have any background information of the proper procedures of spoken discourse proposed by Grice Maxims, (1975). And a necessity for conducting training courses to the Jordan police officers in forensic linguistics. Also it shows that understanding the legal language and methods of analysis helps in providing better awareness of legal contexts, so would not be used later as counter evidence against fair legal judgment system, which starting from police officers who conduct interviews and legal investigations.
