Abstract

The school is the second home for students. The student spends at least eight hours a day and has great importance in educating and educating the members of the community. When the teacher and the school are characterized by good qualities, the student is accepted with all love. Teachers are responsible for observing the children in their classrooms in order to keep them safe. Child abuse is included as part of a teacher’s social responsibility to protect children from abuse. Also child abuse is a significant public health problem, affecting hundreds of millions of children globally. It has been linked to a variety of short- and long-term health consequences, including poor physical and mental health, changes to brain architecture and development, altered biological factors, reduced cognitive ability and educational achievement, and impaired psychosocial functioning. Aim of the study: Is to assess the knowledge and attitude of the teachers about child abuse in selected primary schools at Minia city. Research design: A descriptive study design was used to conduct the study. Sample: Study was conducted on (274) teachers. Settings: Eight of urban and rural public primary school at Minia city. Tools of data collection: Included two tools were utilized in this study; first tool: Is a structured knowledge questionnaire comprised of two parts to assess socio demographic characteristics and knowledge of teachers about child abuse. Second tool: Attitude of teachers about child abuse. Results: More than two third of the school teachers had poor knowledge about child abuse and more than half of teachers had negative attitude about child abuse. Conclusion: Regarding knowledge of teachers about types of abuse in urban school was physical abuse but most knowledge of teachers about types of abuse in rural school was negligence, regarding knowledge of teachers about child abuse more than two third of the primary school teachers had poor knowledge score levels related to child abuse. There is a statistical significant difference between the Primary school teacher’s educational level, teaching experience, and their knowledge score levels, and regarding attitude of the primary school teachers about child abuse more than of half had negative attitude about child abuse among primary schools. There is statistical significant difference between primary school teacher’s age, marital status, residence, years of experiences, and educational level and their attitude. Recommendation: Conduct different in-service educational programs for the primary school personnel (teachers, nurses, physician and social workers), regarding understanding of child abuse concept and proper handling of such cases, design and disseminate related booklets and brochures to raise public awareness regarding child abuse (types, signs and symptoms, causes, predisposing factors, high risk children and proper management), as well the community social support network, Given the special role of Community Health nurse in identifying and reporting child abuse cases, it essential that the knowledge of healthcare professionals be improved and practical plans for dealing with cases of child abuse or suspected child abuse be established, and conduct further researches to investigate the contributory factors leading to child abuse and the adequate intervention.
