Abstract Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome of systemic illness accompanied by bacteremia occurring in the first month of life. The aim of this study is: to assess nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding neonatal sepsis, and evaluate the impact of educational program about neonatal sepsis for nurses working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Minia Hospitals. Research Design: a Quasi-experimental research design was utilized for the purpose of current study. Setting: this study was conducted at neonatal Intensive Care Units at two hospitals. (central der-Mwas hospital and general Mallawy hospital) these hospitals belonged to Ministry of Health. Subjects: A convenient sample of all nurses (50) working in neonatal intensive care units. Tool of the study Data was collected through the utilization three tool; tool one: A Structured Interview Questionnaire Sheet, tool two: Knowledge assessment sheet, and tool three: Observational checklist. Results: Regarding total knowledge level, 76.0% of nurses had good knowledge in pre-educational program, and all of them (100.0%) of them had it in post program and in follow up time. Regarding total practice level ,90.0% of nurses had good practice level in pre-educational program, and all of them (100.0%) of them had it in post program and in follow up time. Conclusion: By the implementation of the program there was remarkable improvement of nurses’ knowledge and practices, it was clear in post-test results. By the end of the program there was successful in correcting the deficiency in nurses’ knowledge and practices. Recommendations: The developed program should be applied and repeat again every 6 months in the same study setting and adopted in other similar settings with required modifications, provision of continuing education programs on regular basis is suggested in order to refresh and update nurse’s knowledge, as well as reinforce proper practices related to neonatal sepsis in neonatal units. |
