Abstract

The aim of the present study was to compare between 2 bioceramic materials (RetroMTA and ProRoot MTA) regarding their cytotoxicity, biocompatibility and physical properties.
Materials and Methods:
48 sampeles of the two materials were divided into 4 subgroups for evaluation of cytotoxicity at 24 and 48 hours. Twelve white female Wistar-Furth rats were divided into three groups (4 rats each) according to time of observation, One week observation period, Two weeks observation period and one month observation period for biocompatibility evaluation. Eighty discs of both materials were prepared and setting time, solubility and dimension stability were tested. Data was subjected to statistical analysis.
Results:
• RetroMTA and ProRoot MTA were cytotoxic in neat concentration but with diluted concentrations they were non cytotoxic materials and advanced the cell proliferation with no statistically significant difference between them.
• When RetroMTA and ProRoot MTA were subcutaneously implanted, the inflammatory cell count and fibrous capsule thickness of both materials decrease with time. After one month observation period, there was no significant
difference in the inflammatory cell count in between the tested materials and the control group (the two tested materials were biocompatible).
• RetroMTA recorded significant shorter final setting time than ProRoot MTA.
• RetroMTA showed higher solubility than ProRoot MTA. The solubility results of both materials complied with the requirements of ISO 6876/2001 specification and ANSI/ADA specification No.57 .
• RetroMTA recorded significant higher dimensional changes mean value than ProRoot MTA group. But both of them were in in agreement with ISO 6876/2001specifications.
Conclusion:
Under the conditions of the present study, it can be concluded that:
• Both RetroMTA and ProRoot MTA were biocompatible materials.
• RetroMTA has a shorter final setting time than ProRoot MTA.
• Both RetroMTA and ProRoot have an accepted range of solubility and dimensional stability.
Recommendations
1. Further studies should be carried out with the purpose of studying the physical properties of RetroMTA as we have few studies in this issue.
2. Studying antimicrobial effect of RetroMTA.
3. Radiopacity should be tested after replacing the radiopacifying agent bismuth oxide with hydraulic calciumzirconia.
