Abstract

Adolescents need much attention as they constitute one-fifth of the total population and about 84% of this population live in developing countries. Also, they are susceptible to poor nutritional status if they do not meet their increased nutritional needs because of growth spurt, psychological and sexual maturity and cognitive development occurring during this period. Aim was to asses’ dietary habits, self-efficacy and barriers to change among adolescents in preparatory schools in Port Said city. Research design a descriptive cross - sectional research design was used in this study. Setting was conducted at five preparatory schools, selected randomly from all five districts of Port Said City; Egypt. Sample A multistage sampling technique was used in this study all students from the two classes chosen randomly from each school in the previous mentioned study settings, with total number of 350 students. Tools: four tools used in this study, first: a dietary questionnaire divided into two parts: 1) Personal characteristics of the students; 2) dietary habits, second tool: healthy and unhealthy dietary habits and food, third tool: Self-efficacy scale and fourth tool: Barriers to change scale. Result: The mean age of students was 11.53 ± 1.11, 70.6% of them were females, 29.4 % were males, the mean score of eating habits was 21.21 ± 4.07, the mean score of self -efficacy was 12.26 ± 3.03, while the mean of barriers to change was 3.73 ± 3.73. Conclusion: students had unsatisfactory or poor eating habits, they get high mean score of self -efficacy which referred to had good capacity for using advice aimed at improving one’s nutrition, moreover, students had no or little barriers in modifying one’s own eating habits with the aim of improving them, no statistical significant correlation were detected between eating habits, self-efficacy and barriers to change of the students. Recommendation: Develop tailored nutrition interventions, improving adolescents’ consciousness aimed at adopting a healthy eating habits, nutrition professionals should work with parents to provide nutritional knowledge to the adolescent students.
