Abstract

The continuous growth of Islam and its wide spread throughout the world has called for the urgent need to translate the Holy Qur’an. The necessity for translating the Qur’an lies in the fact that the teachings of Islam are found within the verses of the Qur’an which are the true guide for all Muslims around the world. There is a large number of translations of the Qur’an that are found in libraries carried out by Muslims, non-Muslims and from different tongues and cultures. Having a large number of translations for the same book raises the question of why all the translations are not the same. This is due to the highly sublime language of the Qur’an and the richness of the Arabic language used in its verses with its rhetorical devices. The aim of this study is to deal with three of these translations which were authored by three translators: Ghali, Pickthall and Arberry in particular, with analysis and assessment of the semantic and rhetorical images in Surat Yusuf that arise from misunderstanding of some words of the original text. The research also holds a comparison between the three works so as to shed light on the best translation that may be considered the closest to the meaning of the verses. The research introduces some accurate translations to the meanings of the Qur’an in Surat Yusuf and which Ghali, Pickthall and Arberry did not translate accurately. The research highlights the scientific method followed in the study and the reasons which pushed the researcher to select these three translations in particular as well as the books of exegeses on which the research depended and the English references and the Arabic dictionaries from which it took benefit. The research is concluded by demonstrating the correct and incorrect trials in translating these semantic and rhetorical images in Surat Yusuf by the previously mentioned translators.
