Abstract

Nonylphenol is an endocrine disrupting chemical, which is capable of interfering with the hormonal system of various organisms. The current study was conducted to study the histological, immunohistochemical and morphometric changes in the mammary gland following exposure to different doses of Nonylphenol and to evaluate the protective role of garlic on these changes. 56 female albino rats were used and classified into 5 groups: group Ⅰ: (Control group) included 16 rats subdivided into two subgroups. Ia: included 8 rats which were fed on basal diet only and Ib included 8 rats which were given garlic in a dose of 250mg/kg/day orally by orogastric tube. group II: 10 rats received NP in a dose of 25µg/kg/day orally by orogastric tube. group III: 10 rats received NP in a dose of 125µg/kg/day orally by orogastric tube. group IV: 10 rats received NP, as group II, and garlic in a dose of 250mg/kg/day orally by orogastric tube. group V: 10 rats received NP, as group III, and garlic in a dose of 250mg/kg/day orally by orogastric tube. The duration of the experiment was 14 days. Specimens from the mammary gland were obtained and processed for light microscopic examination. Morphometric study was also done, and statistical results were analysed. Nonylphenol administration induced structural changes in the mammary gland. Statistical analysis showed that there was a highly significant increase in the mean values of the number and size of mammary ducts, the percentage area of collagen fibers and the percentage area of ki-67 positive reaction compared to control group. Partial improvement occured in rats received garlic.
