Abstract Substance use is a worldwide problem that has serious effects on every global community and nation. Motivational interviewing (MI) has proven valuable in the treatment of substance use. It depends on enhancing the client’s confidence in his capability to cope with obstacles and to succeed in change.Motivational interviewing utilizes a non-confrontational, collaborative effort between the therapist and the client to spark motivation and initiate change.Motivational interview should be included in every substance use management protocol.The present study aimed to determine the power of counseling during motivational interview on substance abusers.This study followed a quasi-experimental design. It was conducted at”The Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery Center”; addiction department. This center is affiliated to Tanta University Hospital. The subject of the study consisted of 60 clients assigned by simple random sampling into two equal groups, experimental and control group. They were selected according to the following inclusion criteria; willing to participate in the study, newly admitted (after 1 st week of admission after passing the detoxication stage), age above 18 years old, clients with no comorbid psychiatric or mental disorders. |
