Abstract

Objectives: To study - The effect of date of production 2017and 2016 maize seeds on germination characters and seedling parameters of studied maize hybrids. -The performance of hybrids on seed germination characters and seedling parameters. - The effect of antioxidants on seed germination characters and seedling parameters. - The effect of growth regulators on seed germination characters and seedling parameters. - The interactions effect between maize hybrids, date of production, antioxidants and growth regulators on germination characters and seedling parameters. Methods and Results: The experiment was arranged in factorial experiment in Randomized Complete Block Design in Giza Seed Testing Laboratory to study the two types date of production 2017and 2016 maize seeds , response of three hybrid maize , five different antioxidants and watered with previous GA3 solution on seed germination characters and seedling parameters. Hundred seeds of each hybrid were allowed to germinate in four replicates in rolled rowels in the germination chamber at 30 ± 1 °C. The obtained data regarding to the response of some maize hybrids storage for different periods, five different antioxidants and GA3 solution to germination characters and seedling parameters were statistically analyzed. The results showed that the highest averages of germination characters and seedling parameters were produced from 2017 while, germination index, seedling height reduction and relative dry weight were produced from 2016. The results showed that the highest averages of germination characters (percentage of final germination, germination rate, energy of germination and) and seedling parameters (shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight, shoot and root dry weight and relative dry weight) produced from Giza310 hybrid while, germination index, produced from Giza324 and seedling vigor index and seedling height reduction produced from Giza323 hybrid. Concerning to the effect of the date of production, the highest averages of studied germination characters and seedling parameters obtained from 2017 season while, the highest averages of germination index and seedling height reduction obtained from 2016. In regarding to the effect of hybrid performance the results point toward that the highest averages of germination characters and seedling parameters recorded from T.W.C. 310 while, the highest averages of germination index recorded from T.W.C. 324.The highest averages of relative dry weight was in T.W.C.323 .The results showed that soaking in antioxidant substances such as humic acid 500 ppm for 24h or growth regulators (GA3 at 50 ppm).significantly increasing studied germination characters and seedling parameters. Conclusion: It could be concluded that, in order to maximize the germination characteristics and germination parameters of Maize (Zea mays L.) hybrid under growth regulators or antioxidants treatments used, we can recommend that the Hybrids variety T.W.C 310 cultivar. This variety was more tolerant with soaking in antioxidant substances such as humic acid 500 ppm for 24h or growth regulators (GA3 at 50 ppm.
