Abstract

Breast is a glandular organ influenced by hormones in females with various structures giving rise to different types of lesion and lumps. Benign lesions of breast are the most common lesions which account for 90% of the clinical presentation related to breast Much concern is given to malignant lesions of the breast because breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women in Western countries; however, benign lesions of the breast are far more frequent than malignant ones. Benign breast disease deserves attention because of its high prevalence, its impact on women’s quality of life, and for some histologic types, its cancerous potential. Benign breast disorders and diseases encompasses a heterogeneous group of lesions that may present a wide range of symptoms or may be detected as incidental microscopic findings. The incidence of most benign breast lesions begins to rise during the second decade of life and peaks in the fourth and fifth decades, as opposed to malignant diseases, for which the incidence continues to increase after menopause, although at a less rapid pace. The aim of this study was to determine the most prevalent benign breast lesions among patients who attending Mansoura university hospitals (MUH): Endocrine surgery unit, general surgery outpatient clinics and oncology center (OCMU). The study included total number of 643 females for a period of 2 years between May 2016 and April 2018. All the patients were subjected to full history taking and clinical examination including both general examination and local breast examination. Clinical investigations were performed to all the cases included routine laboratory measures, ultrasound and mammography was done to all the cases. The pathology was conducted using FNAC and trucut biopsy. The results of the study showed that most of the cases with BBDs presented in the second, third and fourth decades of life. Fibroadenoma was the most common lesion detected among the cases included in the study followed by fibrocystic diseases, duct ectasia and mastitis. The results also showed that most of the cases weren’t on chronic use of contraception. The main presenting symptom of the cases showed variation according to the type of the disease, but in general breast mass was the most common presenting symptom followed by mastalgia and nipple discharge.
